Winners of 2016 Recognising Excellence Awards

School of Biological Sciences

Once again we were delighted with the number and variety of nominations and it was a difficult job to decide on the winners of each category. There is clearly so much effort being made by many people across the School.

The winners were announced by Head of School, Prof David Gray, at a School meeting on Thursday 8th December. Seven awards were presented across openness in animal research, public engagement and knowledge exchange, along with with one mention for special achievement.


University of Edinburgh selected as finalist

Nearly two years ago we wrote a short article for SPROUT describing our participation in the BBSRC sponsored ‘Excellence with Impact’ competition. The idea behind the competition is to show how our world-leading research in biology is being appreciated and used both by the public (‘Public Engagement’) and by business (‘Knowledge Exchange’). This two-year extravaganza involving 30 UK institutions is reaching its climax and the winner will be announced in May this year. The good news is that Edinburgh was selected as one of the ten finalists. 


Researchers at The Roslin Institute to advise Scottish Government on animal disease outbreaks

The Scottish Government has announced that EPIC, the Pan-Scottish Centre of Expertise on Animal Disease Outbreaks, is to receive £1.97M in the first year, as part of £48M announced for funding into Scottish agriculture, food and environment research.
